Blacklight: Retribution is a massively multiplayer online first person shooter. Since it is PvP (player vs. player) it doesn't really have a story, so basically two opposite teams fight each other in a battle of survival. It features many game modes and a lot of customization tools for your character.
After entering the game you'll be given a short tutorial about the overall layout of the game. After that you can choose to do proper training where you will learn the basic gameplay. The tutorial is very thorough and shows everything from moving to shooting and buying new weapons on the field. It also show you how to use one of the game's best features. It's called the Hyper Reality Visor (HRV), and when you activate it you'll see the enemies on the battlefield regardless of the obstacles. There is one catch thought, you can't shoot while in the HRV mode. Basically it offers a tactical advantage for everyone and you can use it to formulate a strategy against the enemies.
When you're done with the tutorial you can really start playing. You can create your own game or join an existing one through the game's lobby system. At first it can seem a bit difficult since it is very fast-paced, and due to the HRV system you can't really hide anywhere. Buying new weapons and armor is crucial if you want to dominate the battlefield and this can easily be done through depots that are scattered around. After you buy a Hardsuit for example you have to find a good area to deploy it and then you can use it. The Hardsuit is like an armored exoskeleton with powerful weapons and strong armor. The only downside is that it costs a lot of points and if you're not careful enough any player with a rocket launcher can seriously hurt you.
The gameplay mechanics are really well done. The recoil is very realistic and injuries to certain parts of the body are more dangerous than others. For example one hit to the head is enough to kill an enemy, while numerous hits to the legs are required to bring him down.
The graphics and sound effects are outstanding. It uses the Unreal graphic engine and it is truly a delight for your eyes. The artwork and map design are also very well made, and even though the game is set in the future it looks very realistic.
Overall, Blacklight: Retribution is an outstanding game with a lot of features and it will satisfy any FPS fan.
